My simple morning routine with four kids
There's a version of this that starts at 4:45am with a green smoothie and a journal. I tried it. It lasted a week. The routine I actually keep is simpler — and it's the one that carried us through four kids, two schools, and one very full house.
The honest secret? I stopped trying to win the morning and started trying to survive it — then slowly made it pleasant. Small, repeatable wins beat grand plans when you've got six people under one roof.
The night before does the heavy lifting
Every single trick that helps my morning is actually an evening habit. Backpacks by the door. Lunch things in one spot. Water bottles filled and in the fridge. Uniforms and clean clothes picked the night before. My rule is embarrassingly simple: if it can be set up in the dark, it gets set up in the evening.
One anchor for the kids
I don't manage six different start times. We run one simple flow: wake up, eat, get ready, out the door — in that order, every day. Predictability is what makes four kids (and two extra) actually move. The fewer decisions a kid has to make at 7am, the calmer everyone is. Fewer decisions is the whole brand.
I protect twenty quiet minutes
Before the chaos hits full volume, I take twenty minutes for myself — a coffee, a stretch, sometimes just sitting in the kitchen while it's still quiet. It's not selfish, it's the difference between reacting to my family all day and being present with them. Health-conscious starts with your own energy.
Permission to lower the bar
Some days the house looks Pinterest-ready. Most days it's just done. I'd rather have calm, fed, loved kids and a sink full of dishes than a magazine breakfast nobody enjoyed. Simple isn't perfect — simple is sustainable.
Start tomorrow
Pick one thing from this post tonight (backpacks by the door is the highest-leverage one) and do it for a week. Just one. That's the whole routine, in the beginning.
